Remix is an initiative to change the future of waste and recycling in Tirana.
Remix is a transformational urban recycling initiative in Tirana, the capital of Albania, which seeks to provide an interim, low-cost intervention to improve public awareness of source-separation practices, and augment tenuous partnerships between the city’s under-funded municipal infrastructure and nascent informal economies.
Remix began as the guerilla installation of easily-identified, brightly colored screen-like lids at select municipal waste bins to aid in the consolidation of recyclable material. Holes were cut in the lids in the shape of common recyclable materials, encouraging the public to recognize and sort recyclable objects of daily use. The system is designed to be ‘low-impact’, augmenting – but not impeding – current household, informal, and municipal practices.
